confronting my make-up problem

hello, my name is tess, and i’m (apparently) unable to walk past the cosmetics aisle of any store without purchasing any random item i find on sale.

hi, tess.

the first step is to acknowledge the problem, right? right. now, let’s take a deep look at the problem, and shake our heads woefully. please note: this is literally years of make-up i’ve accumulated and just NEVER chucked (so: i didn’t buy all of this in a short amount of time, which would be a lot more worrisome) (yes i’m stalling). i think half the problem is that i am real good at finding sales, and the other half is that i hate to throw things out. following is a series of photographs that alarm me. call this the “before” series.

for real, i use foundation approximately twice a year, and yet i have TWO of the same kind, plus pressed powder.

lord. have. mercy. i don't WEAR perfume.

lord. have. mercy. i don’t WEAR perfume except for maybe four times a year. some of these were samples, others were freebies from a job i worked in college.

this is the most reasonable amount of make-up i own, and i'm still pretty sure it's too much

so much mascara! and so many busted eyeliners (many of which were just stuck in a drawer when they died)

oh. okay. yeah. this is alarming

oh. okay. yeah. this is alarming. a lot of these were way old, or found in a purse (i went deep in this cleaning), or just…not good life choices. i do wear lipstick a lot, though.

y'all, i don't even have the words

y’all, i don’t even have the words. i am a fan of shellacking my nails, but some of these had separated into so many layers i was no longer sure what color they were to start with.

well, now we’ve seen my shame. i’m flinching. i went through and was harsh with myself – do i use this? is it old enough to be grody and in need of a farewell? my end result:

still plenty, but all are (a) useable, (b) ones i really like, and (c) much easier to sort through

a major part of why i did this: i’m moving, and moving in with the manfriend. it seems to me that a small apartment would benefit from a smaller amount of stuff, and so this, i think, will fit nicely into a small set of drawers, and be tucked away in the bathroom.

anyhow. i’ll post other photos later of other room purges – i have a bag of shoes to get rid of, plus some dresses, and so much more to sort through as i prepare to pack up my things and move.
