one of my co-workers has the most gorgeous hair ever, and had it up in this big, sleek bun the other day. i asked her how on earth she pulled it off – and she told me to get a “hair donut” and rock a sock bun.
i spent the next two weeks trying to find a hair donut. turns out, they are NOWHERE TO BE FOUND in this district. thanks, DC, for ruining my dreams of a fabulous bun.
luckily, we have this thing called the internet, and so i went to my trustworthy shopping addiction enforcer, amazon. i found a few choices, but went with one that didn’t look like perhaps the seller had used it once already – the conair “bun maker” set (includes a donut, bobby pins, and a hair tie). it took some time to arrive, since it wasn’t prime-eligible, but somehow when i bought it, the price dropped to $3 from $8. okay! i’m good with that. i didn’t follow the directions they included – which were to put the donut all the way at the base of your ponytail and tuck the hair in around it. instead, i made a high ponytail, pulled the donut to the end of the ponytail, tucked some of the ends of my hair under the edges of the donut, and rolled it down to the base, pausing to tuck stray hairs as i went. i held it all in place with the bobby pins and some hair spray. it also helped to hit my hair with spray before i began, to give it some traction.
here’s a good, easy tutorial if you want to try this yourself.
